HMRC has confirmed that first-time buyers will be able to reclaim stamp duty costs that have been inadvertently made since the Budget.
Some first time buyers who bought properties on the day of the Budget may have not realised that the Chancellor had scrapped the charge. If so, they may have paid stamp duty when they didn’t need to.
Buyers will only be able to claim a refund if a house purchase was completed on or just after 22nd November.
More information and guidance can be found on the HMRC website in the stamp duty changes section and under the link ‘If you need to amend your return’. The HMRC have confirmed buyers will have to send in a written request for a refund to be processed.
